Dr.Balasubramoniam completed his MBBS in 2001 and MS General surgery in 2006 from Medical College, Trivandrum. He then worked as Registrar, CVTS in Ananthapuri Hospitals and Research Institute, Trivandrum till 2008. He completed his MCh (CVTS) programme from Sree Chitra Tirunal Institute for Medical Sciences and Technology,Trivandrum in 2010 following which he worked as a junior cardiac surgeon in Southern Railway Hospital, Perambur, Chennai till 2011. He then worked as Assistant Professor at the Department of CVTS, Sree Chitra Tirunal Institute of Medical Sciences and Technology, Trivandrum, till 2014 following which he joined in Amrita Institute of Medical Sciences as Clinical Associate Professor in Thoracic and Vascular division, Department of CVTS.

His specific areas of interest in thoracic surgery include lung resections for benign and malignant pathologies, mediastinal tumours, chest wall reconstruction for advanced lung and chest wall malignancies, repair of thoracic outlet syndrome and thymectomy in myasthenia gravis and thymic malignancies. He has been trained in minimally invasive thoracic surgery ( VATS ) at National University Hospital, Singapore and Cedar Sinai Hospital, Los Angeles, USA.

His specific areas of interest in vascular surgery includes open repair of arch , descending thoracic, thoracoabdominal and infrarenal aortic aneurysms, aortic dissections with advanced aortic surgery training from Cleveland Clinic, USA and endovascular management of aortic disease like TEVAR and EVAR. He is interested in carotid endarterectomy which forms part of the comprehensive management of stroke and in peripheral vascular interventions for atheroclerotic peripheral occlusive disease and diabetic foot management.

He has been actively involved in postgraduate training and research specifically in areas of development of large and small diameter vascular graft and indigenous aortic stent grafts. He has publications in relevant national and international journals to his credit.
